Resignation of Tamara Rozek
I am sad to report that Tamara
Rozek has resigned as Director of Music, effective
immediately (7/26/28).
Tamara has been a valued colleague and friend
to many and her musical artistry will be missed.
She described to me her reasons for leaving
as personal and professional.
Tamara has specifically requested
that the church not hold any kind of a farewell
event for her, so we will honor her request.
It’s difficult to lose someone unexpectedly
and without much explanation.
We are left wondering why.
It feels like there is no adequate closure.
We will trust that this person we cared about
has her reasons and join together as we lift up
Tamara Rozek and her family in our prayers for
successful and fulfilling next steps in her life.
Church leaders will be gathering
to consider options for an interim period and for
appointing a search committee drawing from a wide
range of congregational interests.
While the uncertainty of in-between times can
be uncomfortable, they are coupled with a heightened
expectation that the best is yet to come and that
South Church’s musical program will grow to new and
exciting dimensions as it under girds the worship
life of our people.
John Zehring
A MESSAGE FROM TAMARA
Dear Friends,
I feel very blessed to have
been welcomed back to South Church for a second
time on staff, and to have been part of this
wonderful faith community for the past four
years. It has been a privilege to serve you and
minister with you, and to work with such
extraordinary colleagues on staff and so many
talented musicians in the choirs and
congregation.
Now I am being called in new
directions musically, and feel that it is time
to allow the opportunities along this path to
unfold. South Church has been a source of
inspiration and joy for me and my family, and I
thank you for all that you have given us,
especially for your friendship. God’s peace and
blessings to you always.
In faith and gratitude,
Tamara

DID
YOU KNOW...?
And now you
know…That 300 years ago there was no such thing
as a
Homecoming Sunday because you
had to go
to church all the time?
Summertime was actually easier for going to
church as the paths and roads were easier for
travel.
All in the Parish were required
to attend church, and if you did not, you were
fined.
However, both men AND women were allowed to join on
their own confession of faith. Each man was allowed a vote regardless of property
ownership, etc.
This departure from the Anglican Church led
to our first measure of democracy of one man, one
vote, 150 years after the first Congregationalists
landed in New England.
By the time our congregation
gathered in 1711, The Congregational Church was the
only church allowed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony,
and churches were only allowed to gather based on
population needs.
Hence, our recognition as the South Parish in
Andover after the population moved southward out of
the original town center now in North Andover.
That’s another story regarding how that
happened!
So, for all of you that have
missed church this summer, will you pay your fine or
will the Deacons and Constable have to come after
you?!
What a few hundred years can do for us that we can
come to any church because we choose to!
And now you know…

PLANNED FIRE DRILL
On
Sunday September 19th the Trustees are
planning a fire drill to occur towards the end of
service. The
purpose is to educate the congregation, adults and
children, on how to respond if there was a real fire
alarm. We
prefer to have everyone aware so that it is
educational for all involved.
Teachers will be instructed in how to exit
the church with the children. More information to
follow as we work out the details.

ANDOVER HISTORY
As part of the Andover
Historical Society’s series on “stories,” you might
have noticed weekly articles in The Townsman
that focus on some aspect of the Town’s rich
history. As this series will run until April of
2012, the Society would welcome new writers who
could add their voice to this anniversary project.
If you have a story you would like to tell, – please
contact committee chair Gail Ralston, 978-409-2375
or
gralston@andover.edu.
We will be happy to work with you on research and
writing.
Editor’s note: {Perhaps a story involving our South Church, thereby
highlighting our history/anniversary as well.}

Y.E.S.S. IS
HERE!!
Youth Education Sunday School is being resurrected
(pardon the pun!) this fall!
After the magical mission trip to John’s
Island, SC, some of us met with Terry Ebner and
presented her with the idea of resuming Sunday
morning meetings with youth in Grades 9-12. As of
right now the curriculum is still in its infancy as
we begin to explore various resources that have been
given to us. One thing is guaranteed, however- this
won’t be a traditional Sunday School format! So
youth, have no fear! We welcome you to come on this
new journey with us as you all continue to explore
your faith and its influence and impact on your
everyday life.
We are looking for 2 more adults to help us
teach. If you are interested, please contact Terry
Ebner at 978-475-0321 Ext. 105 or by email at
TerryEbner@yahoo.com, Emily O’Hara at
EmilyOHara@hotmail.com or Kim Fudge at

LOVING LITERACY
The Board of Women’s Ministry continues to sponsor
the loving literacy program. Please bring your old
children’s books to church. New or used books for children from preschool through 6th
grade
are wanted. Help us encourage the love of reading
for children who do not have the opportunity to own
books. This program benefits the Hancock Courts,
Family Service Inc and Kids Start organizations of
Lawrence. You may leave books- in the blue box
outside the nursery. Thank you for your support! |
PASTOR-PARISH RELATIONS
COMMITTEE
The Church Council has
approved the formation of a Pastor-Parish
Relations Committee. This is a type of committee
which is recommended in modern church
organizations, and was requested in the Call
agreements with Jonathan Drury and John Zehring.
Its purpose is to hold in trust the relationship
between congregation and Pastors, pursuing the
best interests of both equally. It encourages
the Pastors to know what people in the church
are thinking and it encourages representatives
of the congregation to know what the Pastors are
thinking. Their discussions are confidential.
The committee reports to Church Council. Current
members of the committee are: Dave Bryan, Anne
Clough, Tom Guy and Marty Mason. If members of
the church have ideas, hopes or concerns
relative to the Pastor Parish relationship,
please share them with a committee member.

MEMORIAL MUSIC LIBRARY
In
addition to many of the new installations to the
South Church youth center, the Youth Board is
sponsoring a Music Library to be constructed in the
New Year. The library will be built in memory of
Peter Fine, and will display his personal music
collection that he bequeathed to the church. The
collection consists of approximately 600 CD’s of
many different genres of music including: Rock,
Gospel, Classical and Alternative. For the listening
pleasure of all the members of South Church, the
Youth Board is asking for any donations of CD’s to
enhance Peter’s collection. If you would like to
donate any CD’s that will make a good addition to
the library, please place them in the box marked
“Music Library” located in the back of Fellowship
Hall. All the CD’s donated will go directly to the
Peter Fine Memorial Music Library and will be
available to all South Church Members. If you have
any questions concerning the music library or
donations, please contact Dennis Hacker at
D_Hacker@comcast.net, or Jonathan Drury at
Jonnycoolguy@hotmail.com. |

REMEMBERING OUR
PROMISE
Let’s Rock…
During the baptism ceremony at South
Church, all members are asked to promise to nurture
and support our little ones. We are offering an
opportunity for our church members to be a special
part of that promise and enjoy the warmth and love
of our South Church children. Please sign up to be a
“Grand Rocker” in the Nursery during worship on
Sunday mornings. Volunteer rockers will be assisting
nursery-caregiver Susan and a parent helper, so the
responsibility is to sit and rock with a child or
perhaps read him/her a story. To be a volunteer
“Grand-Rocker” and share in this special connection,
please sign up in Fellowship Hall during coffee hour
at the Board of Women’s Ministries table. If you are
on the list from 2008 we will schedule you for 2009.
If for some reason you can not continue to rock,
please let me know.

Gotta Niche?
Some of our Sunday School teachers would love for
you to share it with their class! For instance,
last year Dave Bryan shared a bit of his building
experience with 4th graders learning
about Jesus’ parables, specifically the one about
building faith on a strong foundation. This summer
a number of folks captured everyone’s attention with
their travel and mission outreach experiences as
children learned about ways we can build a better
world. Char Lyons has shared cemetery stories she’s
continually “digging up” and Martin McGrath rocks
the children’s sing-a-longs with his electric
guitar.
These are just a few examples . . . I’m sure you can
think of all kinds of creative ways you might help
the teachers make the Bible stories come alive!

contribute many ways to our effort. We are deeply
grateful for all that you do and thank your for your
