Volunteer Ministries |
|
| |
This year we are inviting members and
friends of South Church in Andover to consider a call to volunteer in
several forms of ministry in our church family. Some are long-established
opportunities and some are new endeavors. Here are some specifics. |

Day of Service 2010
Celebrating 11 Years
Saturday,
November 13, 2010
Doing
Good Rev. Justin Edwards-South Church 1827-1827
Sign
up for a local mission project of your choice. All ages welcome!
Bring your family and friends. Last year, our hands-on volunteers
numbered 300. From over a dozen project opportunities, there is a
spot suited just for you: serve for a morning or afternoon, 1 to 4
hours, music, crafts, painting, raking and baking more. New
ideas are welcome and donations are appreciated. The Day of Service
kicks-off with a continental breakfast and singing before we fan out to
our various project sites. To conclude the experience, we gather for
dinner, fellowship, and reflection. Look for your 5 Minutes for project
descriptions. Sign-ups will begin in October. Let us honor South
Church's long tradition of mission service as we gather together to
work, to serve, and to strengthen our community.

BREAD & ROSES
Bread and Roses is a
local mission in Lawrence where individuals and families come for a meal
five nights a week. Volunteers from South Church participate twice a
month – the third Saturday and the fourth Thursday. Jobs include
shopping, cooking and serving. You would be scheduled to help a
few times a year. It is a wonderful way to help the community while
meeting others from South Church.
We especially need servers and cooks on the fourth Thursday of every
month!

HISTORICAL RESEARCH
The Historical Committee
of South Church has the mission to inform the members of significant
events and themes in our history as a congregation. Our history together
is nearly 300 years long, and we are beginning to prepare for the
anniversary celebration. In addition we organize, preserve and protect
the historical documents and artifacts.
The committee welcomes
anyone who would like to participate. You can help in just one project,
or several. Meetings are scheduled as needed; there is no regular
meeting time.

SOUTH CHURCH GREEN TEAM
The Green Team's purpose is to promote good environmental stewardship in
the church's facilities, and also in our homes and the wider community.
Its activities include reducing energy consumption, and promoting the
Three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The Green Team is offering an
All-Member retreat for Fall Foliage, Fun, Faith, and Fellowship this
September 25-27. If you would like more information about the retreat
contact Steve Fink at
Stephen.Fink@verizon.net or to
participate in other ways, please contact one of the members below.

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE
The Fellowship Committee coordinates a wide range of activities within
the church. We are the group primarily responsible for the "Fellowship
Hour" after services throughout the year, offering coffee in the regular
season and lemonade and cookies during the summer. In addition, the
committee comes up with other activities that bring the church together
ranging from church dinners, chili cook-offs and dances to outings to
performances, fireworks, and whatever appeals to the committee that
year. We also support other groups within the church when they plan
activities such as an all-church picnic at the end of the church school
year. If you would like to help with any of these activities please
call.

VISITATION, CARE AND CALLING
In concert with the pastoral staff and the Deacons,
interested persons will assist in caring for other South Church members
and friends who are in special times of need, shut-in at home, or in
nursing homes, rehab, and hospitals. Training and support will be
offered to all interested persons.

NURSERY ROCKERS
Remembering our
baptismal promise… Please consider being a “grand rocker”
in the Nursery or the Beginners Class (ages 2 & 3) during church worship
hour. Volunteer “rockers” will assist two teachers, so the
responsibility is simply to rock a little one or perhaps read a story.
To share this special connection with the youngest members of our church
family.
