Weekend of Service

November 5th & 6th, 2022!

We have combined the benefits of both our beloved Day of Service and the recent Covid-friendly Season of Service. Join us on our newly reimagined Weekend of Service with new and returning volunteer opportunities, as well as connection time with the Kickoff Breakfast & Reflection and Celebration Ham & Bean Dinner.

We have a variety of exciting projects over 2 days – both indoor and outdoor, for those with young families and for those that are young at heart, at the church or out in the community, and some that are Covid-friendly. Create and deliver care packages for our own church members. Pack groceries for Neighbors in Need or cook and serve for Lazarus House. Help with fall garden work at the Giving Garden. Write holiday cards for our troops and much more! We are also collecting items such as Thanksgiving groceries and bikes. All are welcome to boldly embody God’s love through service!

Saturday Service Projects

  • Care Package Cookie Baking at Home: Bake 2 dozen sugar cookies. Drop off in South Church kitchen no later than 3pm on Friday, Nov. 4th. Cookies will be decorated by our youth and sent in care packages to people on the South Church Care & Calling list.  Click here to sign up.

  • Weekend of Service Kick-Off Breakfast Volunteers: Help to serve and clean-up at our breakfast in Fellowship Hall. FULL – Thanks to our middle schoolers!

  • AVIS Trail Maintenance: FULL – Thanks to our middle schoolers!

  • Lupine Road Habitat/ACT Retaining Wall Project: Meet at Lupine Road Habitat/ACT location. Ages 16 & up with adult. Click here to sign up.

  • Bikes Not Bombs – bike prep: Under the direction of Bikes Not Bombs staff, we will prepare donated bicycles for shipment overseas. We will also solicit monetary donations from the bike donors to help cover the cost of shipping. Age 10-14 when accompanied by an adult/age 15 without an adult. Click here to sign-up.

  • Neighbors in Need – Food Collection: Take Thanksgiving food donations from cars as they pass through loop drive in front of South Church. Click here to sign up.

  • Holiday Cards for our Military: Write a holiday greeting and personalized note that will be sent to our deployed U.S. troops in time for the Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza holiday season. Adults or kids with an adult. Cards must be returned to South Church by Monday, November 7th
    • Sat., Nov. 5th from 9am-noon. You may work at home or South Church.
  • Care Packages for People on South Church’s Care & Calling List: Young families are invited to decorate cookies, make a fall craft, and write a card to be used in care packages for people on the South Church Care & Calling list. Great for young families! All children through Grade 5 with an adult. Click here to sign up.

  • Giving Garden – Seasonal Work: Winter garden prep and maybe late Fall harvest. All are welcome, 12 and under with adult supervision. Click here to sign up.

  • Lazarus House – Project Bethlehem Prep: Clean and prep area for gift receipt. Make baked goods for freezing — to be brought out daily through the month of November and December for volunteers and guests. Click here to sign-up.
      • Sat., Nov. 5th from 9:30am-noon. Great for adults and children with adults.
  • Bread & Roses – Food Sorting: Help sort and organize food drive donations. 14 years or older, fully vaccinated, and wear a mask while in the building at 58 Newbury Street, Lawrence, MA. Click here to sign up.
    • Sat., Nov. 5th 10:00-1:00pm
  • Lazarus House – Family Shelter Dinner: Bring your favorite recipe and ingredients to prepare dinner and dessert for 7 adults and 9 children. Use their spacious kitchen to prepare the meal, and serve buffet style in the family shelter dining room. Adults and children with supervising adults welcome. Click here to sign-up.

  • ABC House Fall Outdoor Clean-Up: Leaf raking, yard projects, and shed clean-up at ABC House. All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Click here to sign up.

  • Andover Bell Festival assist with set-up/greet/clean-up: Help move tables or greet visitors or clean-up after the concert. All ages but children with an adult. Click here to sign up.

  • Care Package Delivery: Deliver one or more care packages after church to local seniors and others needing a little extra love. All ages welcome with an adult. Pick-up in Fellowship Hall. Click here to sign up.

  • Weekend of Service Ham & Bean Supper Volunteers: Help to set-up, serve, and clean-up at our end-of-weekend dinner in Fellowship Hall to celebrate the service our congregation did all weekend. Click here to sign up.

Sat., Nov. 5th 9-12pm Donation Drives

Drive-through drop-off donations on Saturday, November 5th from 9-noon in front of South Church.

  • Neighbors in Need Non-Perishable Thanksgiving Food Drive: Collecting Thanksgiving foods for the NIN community.
    • 1,000 $25 Market Basket gift cards
    • Cranberry Sauce
    • Gravy
    • Stuffing Mix
    • Quick Bread Mixes
    • Brownie Mix
    • Festive extras like holiday napkins, box of chocolates, etc.

You may make a donation by clicking here and a volunteer will purchase a Market Basket gift card. 

  • Used Bikes for Bikes Not Bombs (Sat., Nov. 5th from 9am-noon): Bikes of all kinds are welcome, from mountain bikes, road bikes, BMX bikes, tandem bikes, children’s bikes, adult bikes, tricycles, and kick scooters. The only stipulation is that bikes cannot be rusty. The drive is also accepting bicycle parts, tools, lights, pumps, and locks. Bicycles will be sent to Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean to be used for transportation.
